President
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah left Freetown Wednesday morning
to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government
Summit in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Vice President Solomon Berewa is
also away in Vienna participating in a global
conference on peace and is expected Thursday
4th December, 2003.

In
the event of the absence of both the President
and the Vice President section 54, sub-section
6 of the Sierra Leone Constitution of 1991 provides
for the Speaker of Parliament to perform the
duties and functions of the President and subscribe
to the Oath under the Second Schedule, until
the return of either the Vice President or the
President.
In
this regard, Chief Justice Abdulai Babatheh
Timbo has administered the oath of office on
Speaker Justice Edmund Kadoni Cowan in a brief
ceremony held at the Hill Station Presidential
Lodge.
In
his brief remarks following the swearing-in
ceremony, the Acting President pledged to maintain
the current peace and tranquillity during the
short period of absence of the President and
Vice President.
