COMMONWEALTH HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING IN MALTA

The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, left Freetown on Thursday 24th November 2005 to attend the 2005 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Valletta, Malta.
The meeting which is being attended by fifty-two Heads of State and Government from four continents of the world and Her Majesty the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, and traditional Head of the Commonwealth, started with a flambouyant opening ceremony at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta on Friday, 25th November, 2005.
The host Prime Minister, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi in his statement at the opening ceremony stressed that underdevelopment appears to be unrelenting and poverty resists eradication. Differences in life expectancy, he said, remains too wide to be just, and too many people are forced by various pressures to migrate from their homelands. "In such a context, it might seem that the new communication technologies will serve not to emancipate and connect people, but to divide, more radically than ever the poor from the better off".

PROFESSOR JOKO-SMART HEADS ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION

Prof Joko-Smart taking oath
A new Commissioner, Henry Mathew Joko-Smart, has been appointed to head the Anti-Corruption Commission.
While congratulating Mr. Joko-Smart on his new appointment after taking the oath of office, President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah gave a brief background to the setting up of the Commission. The President stated that after his assumption of office as President in 1996 he saw the need to address the issue of corruption in the country as he had envisaged problems in the reconstruction process after the war and especially with the then prevailing circumstances in the country where corruption was rampant. He therefore approached the British government for assistance in that area. The British government, he said, was kind enough to provide a consultant to help in the setting up of the Commission.

COMMISSION OF INQUIRY TO PROBE NEWMAN-SMART'S DEATH

About a year ago Ms. Gloria Newman-Smart (now deceased) became the first woman to be appointed Principal Immigration Officer of the country's Immigration Department.
Her appointment came about as a result of President Kabbah's tireless efforts to bring sanity into Sierra Leone's Public Service. The Immigration Department was identified as one the public institutions that was plagued with corruption.
In a very short period of Ms. Newman-Smart's leadership, she began to make strides unmatched by any of her predecessors. This situation unfortunately was not allowed to yield more benefits for Sierra Leoneans as Ms. Newman-Smart was allegedly accused of bribery and corruption and was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission. She was detained in police custody and the circumstances eventually led to her death.

President Kabbah's Eid Message

I greet you in the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. In this message on the occasion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid, I should like us to briefly reflect on three related things:
First, I would like us to reflect on the assurance of Allah's redeeming grace and its meaning for all who believe in the Almighty. In our celebration we also have the opportunity to acknowledge the Koranic message that for Allah's grace and mercy, His compassion and forgiveness "we would have been sternly punished for all of our offences". But for Allah's grace, mercy and love, "none of us would have been cleansed of sin". And of course but for Allah's grace none of us would have been here to observe this year's holy month of Ramadan with millions of others throughout the world.
