ONS
Launches Security Sector Reform
Documents
One
of the legacies of the almost
eleven-year rebel war in Sierra
Leone is the realization of the
need for the country to have a
well structured, well-equipped
and a well coordinated security
apparatus in place.
Prior to the rebel war, the security
sector institutions had suffered
high degree of neglect, making
them ineffective and unreliable
during the course of the war.The
ineffectiveness of these institutions
made the people of Sierra Leone
lose confidence in the security
forces.
To address this situation, government
has made as one of its major challenges
the transformation of the security
sector with a bid of making it
respond adequately to threats
to the State and its citizenry.
As a result government established
the Office of National Security
(ONS) in 2002, charged with the
responsibility of co-ordinating
the affairs of national security,
intelligence gathering and analysis.
The Office of National Security
(ONS) on Thursday, 26th May, 2005
launched three key Security Sector
Reform Documents for Sierra Leone:
the Sierra Leone Security Review
Report 2005, the Protective Security
Manual for Government Ministries
and the Standard Response Guidelines-Decision-making
process.
The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad
Tejan Kabbah, was at the ceremony
to perform the official launching
of the documents.
