New Irish Envoy Presents Credentials

"Ireland recognises the important positive role model which Sierra Leone is both for West Africa and indeed for the whole of Africa in the area of conflict resolution," the new ambassador of the Republic of Ireland to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Liam Caniffe said Friday 26th March 2004, as he presented his letters of credence to President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah at the Hill Station Lodge.

President Kabbah Previews "Bai Bureh Goes To War"

Retired Major Abu Noah, author, poet and Executive Producer of one of the latest films to be shot and produced in Sierra Leone in recent times, "Bai Bureh Goes to war," has given a special preview of the movie at the Hill Station Presidential Lodge Friday 26th March 2004. Realised in collaboration with professional Nigerian moviemakers, the film also featured a largely Sierra Leonean cast and a cream of award winning Nigerian directors and actors, including Fred Amata, Olu Jacobs, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji.

Bumbuna Project Contractor Briefs President Kabbah

The Italian engineering contractors Salini Costruttori, also known as SALCOST, had resumed work on the long stalled Bumbuna Hydro-electric project in the northern district of Tonkolili and indications are that the project may be ready for commissioning by the end of 2005.

Supreme Court Justice Takes Oath

Erstwhile Appeal Court Justice Maitland Tholla Thomson, who recently relinquished his chairmanship of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) executive, has been formally sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone at a brief ceremony held at the Hill Station Presidential Lodge Tuesday 23rd March 2004.

Presidential Helicopter Commences Flight-

An eleven-seater executive helicopter donated to the Presidency of the Republic of Sierra Leone by the Emir of Qatar has completed its maiden test flight, beginning from its Cockerill Military Headquarters base, to around the Freetown Peninsula via the Hill Station Presidential Lodge and back to base, Monday 22 March 2004.

The two-day Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit on "The Challenges of Regional Integration and the Implementation of the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) Initiative" ended in Accra, Ghana Saturday with the World Bank President James Wolfensohn and ECOWAS leaders arriving at decisions to promote greater regional cooperation and development

The long-running impasse among members of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), which has resulted in bad blood, rancour and the total collapse of formal footballing activities in the country, ended today Tuesday 16th March 2004, following President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah's fatherly intervention at the Hill Station Lodge.

President Kabbah Briefs World Bank Project Appraisal Team

President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah has told the visiting World Bank Project Appraisal and Assessment mission about the present status of the country's roads infrastructure as well as government's priority in further improving the network of feeder and trunk roads countrywide. The team, led by World Bank Supervisor Mr. David Rudge, is in Freetown to hold talks with government regarding road development priorities for maximum impact on national job creation and poverty alleviation.

New Dutch Envoy Presents Credentials

The newly accredited Ambassador of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, His Excellency Johannes Wilhemus Gunivortus Jansing, has observed that over the last few years Sierra Leone had "developed from a country at war to a country on its way to structural stability and peace". Envoy Jansing made the statement on the occasion of the formal presentation his Letter of Credence as well as the Letter of Recall of his predecessor at the Hill Station Presidential Lodge Friday 12th March 2004.

SPECIAL COURT FOR SIERRA LEONE OPENS COURTHOUSE

The Special Court for Sierra Leone today opened its ultra-modern Courthouse at the Special Court's Complex at New England Ville in Freetown. His Excellency the President, Alhaji Dr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, declared the Courthouse open and unveiled the plaque commemorating the solemn occasion.

President Kabbah Joins International Women's Day Celebrations In Makeni

President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah has joined thousands of Sierra Leonean women in the Northern Regional Headquarter town of Makeni Monday 8th March 2004 in observance of the International Women's Day as well as launching the report on Building a Women's Law Reform Agenda. The agenda, put together by the Ministry of Social Welfare in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee and the National law Reform Commission, includes the reform of local laws adversely affecting women and girl-children in Sierra Leone

Ghana's 47th Independence Anniversary Celebrated

..The "Made-In-Ghana Goods Exhibition" currently underway at the Atlantic Hall of the National Stadium in Freetown was part of a series of activities marking Ghana's 47th Independence Anniversary in Sierra Leone. President Kabbah who gave the keynote address to mark Ghana's Independence Anniversary, also performed the cutting of the tape at the exhibition's opening ceremony last Saturday, 6 March 2004. He made reference to the Economic Community of West African State's (ECOWAS) objective for an open sub-regional market and the free movement of peoples of all ECOWAS countries within the sub-region.

A significant milestone in Sierra Leonean entrepreneurship was achieved last Saturday, following President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah's official opening of one of Freetown's most prestigious and luxurious hotels, the Kimbima Hotel, located at Aberdeen on the Atlantic seashore in the western part of Freetown.

President Kabbah At Military Athletics Competition

..President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah has commended the highly positive demonstration of cordiality between members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and their civilian counterparts.
Speaking shortly after he declared the RSLAF's annual athletics competition open at the National Stadium in Freetown on Thursday, 4 March 2004, the Commander-in-Chief, who was also grand chief patron at the event, underlined the significance of having both the military and the civilian population co-existing amicably.
