Victims
Commemoration Conference Begins In Freetown
A two-day National Victims Commemoration
Conference, facilitated by the Special
Court for Sierra Leone started Tuesday
at the Miatta Conference Centrel in
Freetown.
The
Chairman of the opening ceremony,
Ms. Christiana Thorpe, said the conference
was a culmination of a series of regional
consultations that had been held countrywide.
The regional consultations, she said,
dealt with and listened to the voices
of the ordinary men and women.
The
Special Court Registrar, Mr. Robin
Vincent, said the presence of President
Kabbah and Vice President Berewa attached
a very high profile to the conference.
Mr. Robin Vincent said although Sierra
Leoneans have diverse views about
the Court, the conference will give
them the opportunity to have a clear
view of what is expected of the Court
and it will identify the issues and
come up with an action plan. The action
plan, the Registrar said will be looked
at by next year to see which areas
have been addressed and in which areas
they have failed.
In
his address while formally opening
the conference, the President and
Head of State of Sierra Leone, Alhaji
Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, said he was
very pleased to be asked to launch
the National Victims Commemoration
