PRESIDENT
KABBAH AT LIBERIA'S 159TH INDEPENDENCE
ANNIVERSARY
His
Excellency the President, Alhaji Dr.
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, together with
Presidents John Kuffour of Ghana and
Laurent Gbagbo of Cote D 'Ivoire were
guests of President of Liberia, Madam
Ellen Johnson Sirlief, this morning
in Monrovia Liberia.
President
Kabbah left Hastings airfield this
morning for Monrovia, Liberia to take
part in Liberia's 159th Independence
Anniversary. Liberia gained her Independence
on 26th July 1847 and became Africa's
first independent nation.
At the Executive Mansion in Monrovia
Wednesday morning the four Presidents
of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and
Cote D'Ivoire had breakfast together,
after which they proceeded to the
Centennial Memmorial Pavillion in
downtown Monrovia for the Commemoration
Ceremony.

WORLD
BANK PRESIDENT PRAISES SIERRA LEONE
The
President of the World Bank, Paul
Wolfowitz, who is touring Africa landed
in Freetown past Thursday on a two-day
visit to Sierra Leone during which
occasion he also took the opportunity
to visit World Bank sponsored projects
in Sierra Leone.
At a press conference hosted by the
Vice President of Sierra Leone, Solomon
Berewa at State House past Friday,
Paul Wolfowitz said that he was impressed
with the development strides that
are taking place in Sierra Leone.
He disclosed that Sierra Leone was
the eighth country he was visiting
in Africa and had also come to the
conclusion that the African continent
was indeed a continent on the move.
"Six years ago, sixteen countries
in Africa were in a state of war,
now only six are still in a state
of war which is a dramatic improvement
towards continental stability,"
the World Bank Chief disclosed.

University
Of Bradford Honours President Kabbah
The
University of Bradford Thursday, 20th
July, 2006 conferred on His Excellency
President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws
(Honoris Causa), at a colourful ceremony
held at the University's Great Hall
in Bradford, United Kingdom.
The
conferment of the honorary degree
on President Kabbah is in recognition
of his contributions in improving
the humanitarian conditions of the
people of Sierra Leone through the
promotion of peace, good governance
and national reconciliation.
President
Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was
chosen on behalf of graduands and
his fellow honoree, Dr. John Hume,
to extend thanks and appreciation
to the university authorities, tutors,
lecturers and well-wishers for their
contributions in making the occasion
a memorable and very enjoyable one.

International Development Secretary,
Hilary Benn And President of the African
Development Bank(ADB), Dr. Donald
Kaberuka End Two-Day Visit To Sierra
Leone
The United Kingdom Secretary of State
for International Development, Hilary
Benn and the President of the African
Development Bank(ADB), Dr. Donald
Kaberuka have ended a two-day visit
to Sierra Leone from 17th - 18th July,
2006.
While
in Sierra Leone Mr. Hilary Benn held
discussions with various stakeholders
in the governance of Sierra Leone
including civil society organizations.
At
a meeting held with the Vice President,
Ministers and other Government Officials
at State House in Freetown, the Vice
President Solomon Berewa in his statement
recalled that the war in Sierra Leone
ended four years ago and in an effort
to address the root causes of that
war, Sierra Leone has registered significant
progress in implementing policy reforms
aimed at reducing poverty, promoting
good governance and sustained development.
Vice
President Berewa stated that the country
is now in the typical post-conflict
phase and has moved from the focus
on humanitarian assistance. For the
past two consecutive years, he said,
growth rates have exceeded 7%. This,
he said, is mainly attributable to
modest but firm recovery in mining,
agriculture and construction.

Kofi
Annan Pays One-Day Official Visit
to Sierra Leone
The
Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Mr. Kofi Annan, has paid a one-day
working visit to Sierra Leone. On
arrival at the Lungi International
Airport on Sunday 2nd July 2006, Mr.
Annan was received by Cabinet Ministers,
Officials of the United Nations in
Freetown and other government officials.
After
an official reception at the United
Nations Integrated Office in Sierra
Leone on Monday July 3rd 2006, Mr.
Kofi Annan was received by His Excellency
President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah at the
State House at 12 noon, where he addressed
a cross-section of Ministers and government
officials.
During
the meeting, President Kabbah expressed
gratitude for all assistance rendered
to Sierra Leone by the Secretary-General
and the United Nations, particularly
the role of the United Nations Mission
in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in their
peace keeping operations. He informed
Mr. Kofi Annan that Sierra Leoneans
were very happy for his visit..

President
Kabbah Returns from Banjul AU Summit
The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan
Kabbah returned to Freetown Sunday
2nd July after attending the Seventh
Ordinary Session of the Assembly of
the African Union in Banjul, The Gambia
from the 1st - 2nd July 2006.
Among
the items for discussion during the
summit were reports from various committees
of the AU including the State of Peace
and Security in Africa, the Special
Summit of the AU on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis
and Malaria (ATM), the Special Summit
of the AU on Fertilizers, NEPAD, ECOSOC,
the Pan-African Parliament and the
Reform of the United Nations.
Other
items proposed by member states for
discussion were: Transformation of
the All Africa Ministerial Conference
on Decentralisation and Local Development
to an African Union Structure, proposed
by Cameroon, Establishment of an African
Centre for Study and Research on Migration,
proposed by Mali, Rethinking the Labour
and Social Affairs Commission of the
AU, proposed by the Republic of Congo,
while Issuance of Legislation for
Organising and Ensuring Respect for
Social Life in Africa was proposed
by Libya, and the Ratification of
the Convention on the protection and
the promotion of the diversity of
cultural expressions proposed by Mauritius
on behalf of Member States, members
of OIF
