Kabbah Returns From
African Union Summit
The
President, Alhaji
Dr. Ahmad Tejan
Kabbah, has returned
to Freetown after
attending the African
Union summit in
Abuja Nigeria, from
the 30th-31st January,
2005.
Delivering
his statement at
the official opening
ceremony of the
Fourth Ordinary
Session of the Assembly
of Heads of State
and Government of
the African Union,
His Excellency Olusegun
Obasanjo, President
of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria and Chairman
of the African Union
said, the decision
to have a Mid-term
session which was
adopted at the July
2004 meeting was
to primarily have
another opportunity
to review the implementation
of the decisions
and declarations
adopted at the July
meetings, as well
as to keep track
of the various conflict
situations on the
continent. He, however,
stated that developments
since July 2004
have made it even
more imperative
to meet around this
period, to address
certain issues of
immediate importance
and concern to us
in Africa.

Republic of Sierra
Leone Armed Forces.
The
day underpins not
only the gallantry
of our military,

Leone's contribution
to the victory of
the world over the
tyranny of man against
his fellow man.

Launch
Of UN Millennium Project
Report
The
United Nations Millennium
Project report with
the theme: Investing
in Development:
A practical plan
to achieve the millennium
development goals,
has been launched
by His Excellency,
President Alhaji
Dr. Ahmad Tejan
Kabbah, at the Miatta
Conference Centre
in Freetown.
Presenting
the report today,
24th January 2005,
at the launching
ceremony the UNDP
Resident Coordinator,
Mr. Victor Angelo,
described the Millennium
Development Goals
as a global compact
to reduce poverty,
which emanated from
the United Nations
Millennium Declaration
in September 2000.
The
eight Millennium
Development Goals
include eradication
of extreme poverty
and hunger, achieving
universal primary
education, promoting
gender equality
and empowerment
of women, reducing
child mortality,
improving maternal
health, combating
HIV/AIDS, malaria
and other diseases,
ensuring environmental
sustainability and
developing a global
partnership for
development. The
Millennium Development
Goal Project has
ten recommendations
with an overriding
message that Developing
Countries' Governments
should adopt ambitious
development strategies
bold enough to meet
the Millennium Development
Goals target for
2015.
President
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
said that launching
the Millennium Development
Project Report provides
him with the opportunity
to reaffirm a commitment
he made five years
ago, as President,
to protect the people
of Sierra Leone
from debilitating
illnesses such as
extreme hunger,
poverty and disease,
by pursuing policies
that are primarily
designed to reduce
poverty by half
by the year 2015.

Girls Benefit from
the Lady Patricia
Kabbah Memorial
Trust Fund
More
girls from schools
all over the country
have benefited
from the Lady
Patricia Kabbah
Memorial Fund
Scholarship award
for the 2004/2005
academic year.
The fund was set
up six years ago
after the death
of the First Lady,
Mrs. Patricia
Kabbah, to put
into reality the
views and aspirations
of the late lady
in her fight for
the educational
advancement of
women and girls
in Sierra Leone.
Speaking
at the presentation
of awards ceremony
held at the State
Lodge, Prof. Sidi
Alghali, one of
the trustees of
the fund, said
the award giving
ceremony commenced
six years ago
and the awards
are given to girls
who performed
extremely well
in the National
Primary School
Examination (NPSE)
from various parts
of the country.

Take Oath of Office
As
moves to strengthen
the decentralization
process and the
resuscitation
of Local Government
District Councils
continue throughout
the country, four
newly appointed
Local Government
Commissioners
and a Chairman
of the Local Government
Service Commission
have taken their
Oath of office
in the presence
of the Head of
State, President
Alhaji Dr. Ahmad
Tejan Kabbah,
at his Hill Station
office in Freetown.

Japanese
Government Opens
Liaison Office in
Freetown
The
ten year-civil
conflict in Sierra
Leone ushered
in the scaling
down and closure
of most diplomatic
missions in Sierra
Leone. Since the
end of the war
in 2002, many
countries have
re-established
diplomatic relations
and reopened their
missions in the
country. The Japanese
government, on
their part, have
has opened a liaison
office in Freetown,
under the Japanese
International
Cooperation Agency
(JICA) programme.

Iranian
President Mohammad
Khatami Visits Sierra
Leone
The
President of the
Islamic Republic
of Iran, Seyed Mohammad
Khatami, paid a
one-day visit to
Sierra Leone on
Saturday, 15th January
2005.
Upon
arrival at the Lungi
International Airport
President Khatami
was welcomed by
His Excellency the
President, Alhaji
Dr. Ahmad Tejan
Kabbah, Ministers
of Government, heads
of diplomatic missions
and international
organisations, and
top government officials.
After inspecting
a guard of honour
mounted on his behalf,
President Khatami
was flown over to
Freetown by helicopter
where he and his
delegation held
bilateral discussions
with President Kabbah
and government ministers.
He later gave a
public address to
the people of Sierra
Leone at the Miatta
Conference Centre
at Brookfields,
after leading the
Zuhr (afternoon)
prayers at State
House earlier in
the afternoon..

Defence Adviser
Calls On President
Kabbah
The
Indian Defence Adviser
responsible for
the African sub-region,
and based in Nigeria,
Col Praveen Dixit,
has paid a courtesy
call on H.E. President
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
at his Hill Station
Office in Freetown.
Col. Praveen Dixit
who is here as guest
of the Ministry
of Defence had discussions
with President Kabbah
on various issues
regarding India's
intervention in
the restructuring
programme of the
Sierra Leone Armed
Forces.

of Nigeria have
held discussions
with President Kabbah
on small arms moratorium
in the West African
sub-region.
Briefing

on their Mission
the leader of the
delegation, Madam
Ayodele Oreagba,
Director for Collective
Defence and Security
in the Federal Ministry
of Cooperation and
Integration said
they are very much
concerned about
the proliferation
of small arms in
the sub-region and
that the essence
of their committee
is to ensure the
culture of peace
in the sub-region.

Commander For IMATT
In Sierra Leone
A new Commanding
Officer for the
International Military
Advisory and Training
Team (IMATT), Brigadier
David Santa-Olalla,
has been presented
to His Excellency
President Ahmad
Tejan Kabbah in
Freetown.
Commander
Santa-Olalla was
presented to President
Kabbah by his predecessor,
Brigadier Simon
Porter, during a
farewell courtesy
call on the President.
Commander Simon
Porter, who has
been in Sierra Leone
for over a year
now said he is leaving
Sierra Leone with
many memories, stating
that the exercises
he participated
in while in Sierra
Leone have helped
him a lot, particularly
in giving him the
opportunity to take
a comprehensive
view of things.

Medical Assistance
Team Calls On President
Kabbah
The
Volunteers In Mission
(V.I.M.), a team
of medical practitioners
from the United
States of America,
who are in Sierra
Leone on a two-week
voluntary service
work, on Wednesday
5th January 2005,
paid a courtesy
call on President
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
at his Hill station
office in Freetown.
Introducing
the team to his
Excellency, the
President, the Director
General of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs,
Ambassador Umaru
Wurie, said this
is the third time
the team is in Sierra
Leone and they will
be working in Bo
and Taiama in the
Southern region
and Freetown in
the Western Area.

General Bamalli Bids
Farewell
The
outgoing Commander
of the Nigerian
Contingent in UNAMSIL,
Major-General Nuhu
Bamalli, has taken
formal leave of
the Excellency,
President Ahmad
Tejan Kabbah at
his Hill Station
office in Freetown.
While
bidding President
Kabbah farewell,
Major-General Bamalli
said that he is
leaving Sierra Leone
with mixed feelings
as he is leaving
his Sierra Leonean
brothers and sisters
he had been working
with and living
with over the last
eighteen months
of his service in
the Nigerian Contingent
in Sierra Leone.
