CHRISTMAS 2005 AND THE NEW YEAR 2006 MESSAGE TO THE NATION

Fellow Citizens, Sisters and Brothers:
First of all let us thank the Almighty God for sparing our lives to see yet another Christmas season. Once again we have another opportunity to recall the good news that the angels brought to the shepherds of Jesus' birth: "don't be afraid because I am here to bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people." Isn't it amazing that although that assurance is more than two thousand years old, it is still news? It fills the air during this and every other Christmas season.
The activities of the modern secular world always tend to overshadow the spirit and true meaning of our religious observances. However, the Christmas message of "peace on earth goodwill to all" still prevails. It is in many respects universal and continues to influence the behaviour of people of many faiths throughout the world. Christmas invokes a spirit of peace, good neighbourliness and conciliation. I remember for instance, in the 1970s when even non-Christians combatants engaged in a protracted war would agree to observe a truce during the Christmas and New Year season.

President Kabbah At University of Sierra Leone Convocation

President Kabbah performed his role as Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone on Saturday 17th December 2005 during which he confirmed degrees, diplomas and certificates to graduating students at Fourah Bay College's Adjai Crowther Amphitheatre, Mount Aureol.
At a very well-attended and colourful ceremony President Kabbah delivered a profound address as Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, which was congregating for the first time as a stand-alone University, separate from Njala University, following the enactment of the new Universities Act of 2005.
The newly restructured University of Sierra Leone is made up of Fourah Bay College, the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences and the Institute of Public Administration and Management.
In his speech, he challenged the graduating students to serve as role models and called on the University to reach out to groups in its immediate environment and its core constituencies.
President Kabbah reminded his audience about the seven core national values he had enunciated at the Fourah Bay College campus about two years ago, namely, resourcefulness, excellence, tolerance, good neighborliness, generosity, honesty and self-esteem.
