President
Kabbah Opens Land Policy Workshop
The issue of land over the last couple
of years has become a very sensitive
issue. Land is a very precious national
resource that if not properly managed
can result in crisis, sometimes escalating
to national dimensions. Sierra Leone
has had little or no land-use planning
since independence. This situation
has created enormous problems which
government has decided to address
once and for all.
The indiscriminate and unlawful acquisition
of land particularly in the Western
Area made it incumbent upon government
to come up with a land policy that
will address the land issue nationally.
Presently, the country is operating
on a two-tier land system wherein
land policy in the Western Area is
different from land policy in the
provinces. To address this issue,
government in the recent past set
up a Land Reform Commission that was
given the responsibility to look at
the land laws and make recommendations
to government. The Land Reform Commission
has almost completed its proposals.
Today, Government has also decided
to have a National Land Policy. His
Excellency the President, Alhaji Dr.
Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, opened the workshop
on the formulation of a National Land
Policy.
