Food Security Pledge Gets A Boost

In his inaugural address upon assumption of office after the May 2002 Presidential Elections to mark his second term of office, President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah made a pronouncement to the people of Sierra Leone that "No Sierra Leonean should go to bed hungry 2007". The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security was given the task of facilitating the actualization of the President's pledge.
The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) commemorated the third anniversary of this pledge with a series of activities, including a symposium, a mini agricultural show held at the Miatta Conference Centre, Youyi Building, Brookfields in Freetown and a mini donors' roundtable at State House on Thursday, 19th May, 2005.
The anniversary was observed as a day of stock-taking to reflect on achievements made so far and put in place innovative strategies aimed at achieving food security by 2007.
Giving a summary of his Ministry's achievements in the area of food security, Dr. Sama Monde told his audience that 61% of goals set for 2004 was achieved.
The President, Dr. Alhaji Ahmad Kabbah, was at the Miatta Conference Hall to open the symposium together with Dr. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
The symposium was followed by a mini donors' roundtable at State House where a proposal on "Operation Feed the Nation" was presented by the Minister of Development and Economic Planning, Mr. Mohamed Daramy, for deliberation by donors represented in the country.

Angelina Jolie Meets President Kabbah

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina Jolie, has had audience with President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah at his Hill Station Office in Freetown.
Angelina Jolie, a renowned film actress is in Sierra Leone as a guest of WITNESS, an international human rights organization which was charged with responsibility of producing a video version of the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). She is in Freetown to discuss with government on how far the recommendations of the report have been addressed.

Twenty Cuban Doctors For Sierra Leone

The health sector, one of the hardest hit by the rebel war is gradually being salvaged through government's collaborative efforts with bilateral and multilateral partners. With a substantial number of hospitals, health centres and clinics already rehabilitated by the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) and through ngos, the age-old problem of insufficient Medical Doctors to cover the entire country has been another area that has received government's urgent and serious attention.

Asantehene Ends Visit To Sierra Leone

The Asantehene of Kumasi, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, left the shores of Sierra Leone over the weekend after a five-day official visit to Sierra Leone, from 26th April to 30th April 2005. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was in Sierra Leone on an invitation by President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.
The Asantehene was special guest at the 44th Independence Anniversary reception held at State House in Freetown on 27 April. The main reason for the visit of the Asantehene was for him to serve as an honoured guest of the government and principal resource person at a special programme for the empowerment of Paramount Chiefs, which was held in Bo, the regional headquarter town of the Southern Province, on 29th April 2005. At the special programme, the Asantehene held a meeting with Paramount Chiefs from the 149 chiefdoms in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone Celebrates 44th Independence Anniversary

President Kabbah in conversation with His Majesty, King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

On 27th April 1961, Sierra Leone which had been a British Crown Colony since 1808, gained its independence. Sierra Leoneans are today joined by other nationals from the international community to celebrate forty-four years of independence. Among the various nationalities is a special guest, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene of the Ashantis of Ghana.
The Asantehene is in Freetown as guest of President Kabbah. He arrived in Freetown on Tuesday, 26th April 2005 and was received by the President at his Hill Station Lodge, where they exchanged fraternal greetings. He will also address a durbar of Paramount Chiefs in Bo, southern Sierra Leone, on Friday 29th April 2005.
On 27th April, President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah made a nationwide broadcast of his Independence Day message to the people of Sierra Leone.

$22m Egyptian Aid For Sierra Leone

President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was guest of President Hosni Mubarak of the Republic of Egypt for the 13th meeting of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) at Sharm El Sheik, Egypt. Whilst in Cairo, he was invited to visit the Egyptian Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccine (VACSERA), where he was received by the Minister of Health Dr. Mohamed Awad Tag El Deen and the Head of VASCERA, Dr. Mohamed Ala Bady.

President Kabbah Attends Requiem Mass for Pope John Paul II

As Christians and other religious denominations all over the world mourn the death of Pope John Paul II, Sierra Leoneans joined the rest of humanity to pay their last respect to the Pope at a Memorial Requiem Pontifical Mass held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, in Freetown on Friday, 8th April 2005.
President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Vice President Solomon Berewa, Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials joined their compatriots at the Memorial Mass. Archbishop Joseph Ganda delivered the sermon at the mass on theme: "Be not afraid", a theme, he said, he chose from the first chapter of a book written by a famous journalist, Alfred Knopf, "Crossing the Threshold of Hope". The book is a compilation of answers to an interview he conducted with the Pope in October, 1993.
President Kabbah signed the book of condolence at the Santano House on Howe Street after the end of the mass.

Law Reform Commission Holds Seminar on Disability Law

Disability issues is one area that have over the years received very little attention in terms of policy and laws. The Law Reform Commission, which was set up by government in 2003 to keep under review all of the laws of Sierra Leone, and also propose the enactment of new laws where necessary, have finally focused its attention on developing a comprehensive law on disability. The Commission on Friday, 8th April 2005, organized a seminar involving stakeholders on a Law on Disability.

President Kabbah Commissions Container Scanning Machines

As part of its obligation to ensure the enhancement of security at the Ports in accordance with International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) regulations, the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration has facilitated the installation of Container Scanning machines at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown.
According to Mr. Kevin Orchard, Director, Inspection Programmes of Intertek International Ltd., the Container Scanning facility was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the British Company, Intertek International Limited and their partners, Ports Maritime Security International and Nutech, a Chinese Company that provided the scanning technology.
The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, accompanied by Vice President Solomon Berewa, was at the Quay on Tuesday 5th April 2005, where he commissioned the machines.

SIERRA RUTILE MINES REOPENS

President Kabbah presses the siren button to signal restart of operations

After ten years of closure following a rebel attack and complete destruction of the assets of the Sierra Rutile Mining Company limited on 25 January 1995, the one-time economic nerve centre of Sierra Leone, largest employer and biggest tax-payer to government that contributed to about 50% of the total foreign exchange earnings of the government, has been relaunched and is now poised to restart operations.

The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, has returned to Freetown after a one-week official visit to the Republic of Cuba. Upon arrival in Havana, Cuba on Tuesday 15th March 2005, President Kabbah was met by Mrs. Marta Lomas, Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation and Mr. Jose R. Guerra Manchero, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs as well as other senior government officials.
