President Kabbah Celebrates With Sierra Leone Police

The Sierra Leone Police Force last week observed a one-week celebration marking the Sierra Leone Police Week, from the 24th -30th October 2005. As part of the celebrations, an award ceremony was held on Saturday 29th October 2005 at the National Stadium, Brookfields, Freetown.
The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was at the ceremony where he decorated eight Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and awarded batons and certificates to retired and service personnel for long service, good conduct, and meritorious service. Among the awardees was retired Commissioner of police Jenkins Smith, who President Kabbah described s a great policeman. Awards were also given to members of the public who have been very instrumental in fostering good community policing in their various areas through Police Partnership Board.
Delivering his statement, President Kabbah said that when he assumed office in 1996, the security situation of the country was in a precarious state and realized that improving the security situation was a prerequisite to the stability of the nation, as well as long-term political, social and economic development. It was on the basis of this that his government realized the need for restructuring of the Sierra Leone Police.

President Kabbah Visits Kissy Community

For any nation to be rated as focused must take education of its children as a topmost priority. For the last couple of years, education and especially education of the girl child has occupied centre stage in the educational development of Sierra Leone.
To boost government's efforts in ensuring that education reaches the most disadvantaged of society, many well meaning Sierra Leoneans have been trying to assist the less fortunate children access education in their communities. Amongst them is the Sierra Leone Market Women Association. Through the dynamic leadership of their President, Mrs. Marie Vandy, the market women from the east-end of Freetown established a community pre-school at Shell Lane Kissy.

SLBS Transitional Management Team Presents Report To President Kabbah

President Kabbah with the SLBS Transitional Management TeamThe Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) has for the last six months been managed by a transitional team put together by the National Commission for Privatization (NCP) and charged with the responsibility to oversee the operations of the SLBS in preparation for its transformation into a corporation.
Briefing His Excellency the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on strides accomplished so far, a member of the transitional team and the representative of the NCP, Mr. Ibrahim Keh Turay explained that a nine-man team drawn from various institutions including the media and civil society have worked relentlessly for the past six months with a view of improving the status of the SLBS, and have come up with a report addressing the areas of management restructuring, human resource capacity, etc.

President Kabbah At World Food Day Celebrations

October 16 is observed every year as World Food Day. The day itself is commemorated as the founding day of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
This year's World Food Day celebrations which marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of FAO was held at the Newton Agricultural Station near Waterloo in the Western Rural District of Sierra Leone on Monday 17th October 2005. The Theme for the celebrations was: "Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue"
In his keynote address while launching the celebrations, President Kabbah stated that he was particularly gratified with this year's World Food Day Celebration theme chosen by the FAO, as it gives the opportunity to examine the true worth of agriculture and to celebrate the on-going contribution of different cultures to global agriculture.

Sierra Leone Millenium Development Goals Report Launched

Five years after the declaration of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, Sierra Leone launched its first Millennium Development Goals Report on Tuesday 11th October 2005 at the Miatta Conference Centre, Brookfields, Freetown.
Presenting the report at the launching ceremony, the Minister of Development and Economic Planning Alhaji Mohamed B. Daramy stated that to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, intensive resource mobilization and economic stabilization through well structured programming must be ensured. With the eight Millennium Development Goals Sierra Leone set itself thirteen target areas.
