Mano River Union Summit Ends In Freetown

A one-day Special Summit of the Heads of State of the Mano River Union countries, comprising Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, was held at State House in Freetown on Friday 28th July, 2005.
The Republic of Guinea was represented by Prime Minister, His Excellency Cellou Dalein Diallo, who stood in for Guinean President, General Lansana Conte, while the Republic of Liberia was represented by His Excellency Charles Gyude Bryant, Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia. Host President and convenor of the Special Summit, His Excellency the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, chaired the meetings.
The purpose of the meeting was to consider the reactivation of the Mano River Union Secretariat in Freetown, as well as other associated institutions of the MRU in Liberia and Guinea, and to deliberate on issues bordering on security within the Mano River Union Basin.
The Summit was preceded by meetings of the ministerial and security and confidence-building action groups.

TEACHER LAGAWO LAID TO REST

The mortal remains of one of Sierra Leone's leading politicians and senior citizens of repute, the late Hon. Richard.E.S. Lagawo, was on Sunday July 17th 2005 laid to rest at the Bo Town (C.K.C.) Cemetery. Many illustrious sons and daughters of the soil from all walks of life, ranging from educationalists to politicians, and above all, the Vice President Mr. Solomon Berewa, and President Alhaji Dr.Ahmad Tejan Kabbah all converged in Bo to say farewell to one of the most respected politicians of his time.

President Kabbah Hands Over 82.5 Million Leones Cheque To Two Winners Of Pik 6 Lotto Jackpot

Two inhabitants of Bo town, Mr. David Tucker of the Bo Teachers College and Oliver Musa, a worker at the Hotel Sir Milton, Bo, were proud millionaires after they received cheques to the value of 40.250 million Leones each on Saturday 16th July 2005 for being the lucky winners of the PIK 6 jackpot Lotto game.
Presenting the cheques to the winners and congratulating them for joining the team of millionaires in the country, the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah advised the winners to use the money wisely and for the good of themselves and their families.

United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Call On President Kabbah

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Louise Arbour, on Thursday July 14th 2005 called on His Excellency, President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah at his Hill Station Office in Freetown. Ms. Arbour, who was accompanied by the Special Representative of the Secretary General, discussed with the President a series of human rights issues and challenges faced by government in addressing human rights violations.

ESKOM OF SOUTH AFRICA COMMENCES ELECTRICITY REHABILITATION

ESKOM, the South African Utility Company that is assisting to overhaul and rehabilitate the electricity power supply system in the Freetown Area under a bilateral cooperation scheme with the Government of South Africa has sent a five-member technical team to Freetown. The team briefed President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on Wednesday, 12th July 2005, on the status of the project as of date.

PRESIDENT KABBAH RETURNS FROM AFRICAN UNION SUMMIT

The President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, has returned to Freetown after attending a two-day Summit of the Fifth Ordinary Session of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Sirte, Libya, from 4th to 5th July 2005.
On arrival at the Sirte International Airport, President Kabbah was welcomed with a Guard of Honour and had a short Press briefing before proceeding to the Presidential Lodge from where he later had a brief meeting with Libyan Leader, Muammar Gadaffi at his official residence in Sirte.

President Kabbah At State Opening of Parliament

President Kabbah on arrival at the Chamber of Parliament The Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone was over the last one year relocated at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex In Kingtom as the Parliament Building was undergoing complete rehabilitation and renovation. Upon completion of the rehabilitation and renovation work, Parliament has been relocated again to its original premises at Tower Hill where it has resumed sittings.
At a very colourful and impressive ceremony at the newly renovated Parliament Building, witnessed by parliamentarians, ministers, the judiciary, the Mayor of the Municipality of Freetown, government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, the press and ordinary citizens, the President, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, gave his address at the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Second Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone on Friday, 1st July 2005.
In his address, President Kabbah highlighted various developments and successes achieved by his government in the recent past in the areas of National Security, Governance, Decentralization and Local Government, Electoral Reform, Gender Empowerment, Social Security, the Private Sector, Financial, Economic and Development Programmes, and Environmental Protection, with special emphasis on the fight against corruption, his food security agenda and gender empowerment.
He emphatically stated that there is real progress in every part of the country ranging from Education to Tourism, which he said should be clearly visible to the objective observer. These achievements, he emphasized, must be consolidated and greater efforts made to attain higher levels of progress in all aspects of the nation's life.
